On cast recordings, some hit musicals miss - and flops soar
Music Review by David Patrick Stearns

Last season, the Broadway public made up its own mind.

Except regarding "Chicago," there was no critical consensus on what to see among the year's new musicals. And the public's favorites - "The Life," "Jekyll & Hyde" and "Titanic" - were baffling. New recordings of their scores offer few clues. First the hits, then the flops, then the sleepers (including an Andrew Lloyd Webber revival not yet on Broadway):

By Jeeves (three and a half stars - out of a possible 4) - Andrew Lloyd Webber's rehabilitated flop has a fragile charm that blooms on this CD of the London revival. With a British cast that has an easier command of the lighter-than-air comic style the P.G. Wodehouse story demands, this story of mistaken identity among the smart set is irresistible, partly because its precious plot is wisely telescoped and adapted for the CD in the style of a radio drama. The tunes and Alan Ayckbourn's lyrics never stop sparkling.
